I generally don’t like to blog about what a shitty day I’m having because (1) I know there have been and will be worse days (2) there are other people having worse days than me.
So I’m going to write about what lifted my mood.
I forgot today was supposed to be the day I should go down to collect my graduation gown. And I was at work. So I asked Mum to go collect it for me. It will be very troublesome for her – she will have to come down to Cityhall to get my authrization letter, then Dad will fetch her from CityHall to NUS. After many phone calls with the admin office at Co-op in school, I realised the gown didn’t need to be collected today – anytime next week is fine, only it will take longer. So I told that to Mum.
‘You don’t have to go down today you know’
‘But I want to’
‘It’s troublesome for you! Let’s just collect it next week, I can bring the letter back, save you a trip’
‘No I want to do it today’
‘Why?!!’
‘I can’t wait, I want to see your graduation gown’.
…
This is just a guess but I think they are very proud of me.

Cher was at MPSH when she messaged me that there are a lot of people selling stuff like plaques and teddy bears. I thought I should call and tell my Mum about it, since she is always a great target when it comes to memorabilia – especially when it comes to graduation. I thought it was a waste of money. I got carried away by work and forgot about it.
About 1/2 an hour later, Dad called me.
‘Hello. can you talk?’
‘Ya why?’
‘Your mother and I are here, and they are selling plaques’
‘What?’ (I was distracted)
‘Plaques. They engrave your certificate on it. You want it?’
‘Huh? No no… no need for it’
‘Really? But it’s a plaque, you need it’
‘I don’t need a plaque’
‘Okay’
‘Ya, don’t waste money’

Seriously, my Dad would be the last person who will get suckered into buying memorabilia. A plaque?!?! It is seriously the most purely ornamental / superficial value item I can think of. What will you do with it? It only serves to show people you have a degree (which is so common nowadays).
But it was sweet when they are so excited about this.
