What a learning driver hears

28 09 2006

when she is driving on the roads on the first time.

Instructor ‘Blahblahblahblahblah’

Chrisss slows down at the traffic lights

Chrisss is thinking ‘I need to wait for speed to decrease before I can change gear, but maybe I can brake first? When I’m in second gear I have to wait for 2 cars before I can clutch in. OMG that moron isn’t trying to cross the road illegally!’

Instructor ‘Blahblahblah Clutch in!’

Chrisss frantically steps on clutch and brake.

Chrisss thinks ‘What gear am I at now?’

Instructor ‘You should have… blahblah 2 traffic lights… slow down…’

Chrisss ‘Clutch first brake? Brake clutch? What what?’

Tomorrow’s my 2nd time outside the circuit. Wish me luck.

On family

26 09 2006

I have never been the very affectionate type, especially towards family. I don’t know, but it always has been a little difficult for me to talk to my father. It’s not as if we would get into an argument or whatever, it’s more of lack of a common topic or such.

Lately I have been going out a lot and not seeing my family much. Suddenly struck me that I do take a lot of things for granted. Like my family, my loved ones, my friends.

Just called my father to talk to him. He works really hard, and sometimes it breaks my heart how hard he works and never complains, because he loves us.

Had a talk with my mother in the morning. She was telling me stuff about work that made me very angry for her, and determined to do something.
And I am not as close to my brother as I would like to be. A while back he told me how his friend would call his sister up in school to chat, and how we never do that. It made me very sad.

I love my family. Very much.

My favourite cartoon when I was younger. =)

Outing day

24 09 2006

Yesterday was a really fruitful day.

We went to have steak first of all at Seah/Liang Seah street where CJ did a funny dance. =)

Then we went to the Singapore Art Museum to see the Singapore B*iennale exhibit Telah Teb*it and All the Best, a Deut*sche Bank collection. I particularly liked the pieces by Miwa Yana*gi and this guy whose name I forgot, but I’ll find out later as the booklet is with CJ.

art_01.gif

Little Red Riding Hood by Miwa Y.

I liked it when he brought me around his old school and told me things that he did when he was younger.

Then we watched Johnny Tucker Must D*ie. Fun, mindless kind of movie. ‘You’re wrong! W-O-R-N-G! Wrong!’ Hahaha.

After that – Riverboat Cruise =) Touristy thing. It was really fun.

Dinner at Makan*sutra, where we met JY and MY.

*

I still love my old Stammy header, but I thought I’d use this for a while cause the colors are so pretty!

*

Anyway, I promised NSL I would do this. :D

19 09 2006

I just downloaded a wordpress theme… it’s really pretty!

Then I realised I needed some uploading on my own server thingy. So I guess I can only hope for wordpress to put it on the site for the users.

Omg, I just realised the photo I took with ChrisChen has officially hit the most number of views on my flickr with 396 views. Why? That photo’s not that interesting! Besides I don’t look that nice in the photo.

I had dinner with CJ at Black Angus and had this huge-ass burger. It’s freaking one pound beef! And I am so bloated now.

Happy 2 months you.

By the way… the ondeh ondeh got crushed. :/

Oh ya! I forgot to add, a few weeks back I realised my blog is being mentioned on some guy forum thingy where they had links to girls’ blogs. And my photo was there?! I still get some hits from there. Apparently I was supposed to be from SMU (haha I’m not!) and is a girl next door (hahaha). I don’t belong there! Please take me off!!

Skinny people rule!

16 09 2006

I got really heated up after reading the following article from the Daily Mail (warning – really condescending and snobby entry ahead)

Pressure was mounting today for a catwalk ban on super-skinny models.

On the eve of London Fashion Week the growing trend for “size-zero” models in the fashion industry is causing grave concern.

Experts say legislation is now needed to protect the health of the models and of the teenage girls and young women who are influenced by them. They are urging London to follow the lead taken by Madrid — and likely to be adopted by Milan — of banning models below a certain size from the catwalks.

Under any ban, super-thin models such as Lily C*ole would be barred. London Fashion Week, which begins next week, has so far refused to follow suit.
The new Spanish rules say models with a body mass index — a ratio of height to weight — below 18 are not allowed to appear at its shows.

A BMI of 18.5 or below is currently classed as under-weight by the World Health Organisation. A model who is 5ft 9in tall would have to weigh a minimum 8st 12lb to model.

The average catwalk model, according to estimates, is 5ft 9in tall but weighs just 7st 12lb, giving a BMI of only 16.

Last month South American model Lui*sel Ramos died moments after stepping off the catwalk from heart failure.

The 22-year-old had been told by a model agency she could “make it big” if she lost a significant amount of weight, and for three months she ate nothing but green leaves and drank only Diet Coke. By the time she traipsed down the catwalk at the Radisson Victoria Plaza in Montevideo, Uruguay, she had stopped eating entirely.

She was cheered and applauded by the fashionistas but collapsed two minutes after she stepped down from the catwalk.

The size-zero epidemic, which started a couple of years ago in Los Angeles, is sweeping across America and redefining the body image 16-to 25-year-olds aspire to.

Size-zero girls weigh not much more than 100lb. Their diet typically consists of an apple for breakfast, a protein bar for lunch and a salad for supper.
Hyper-thin Hollywood stars such as Ni*cole Richie (daughter of singer Lionel Richie), Lindsay Loh*an and K*ate Bosworth are followers of the trend.
Steve Bloomfield, spokesman for the Eating Disorders Association, said today: “We do think legislation is needed.

“This is about protecting the young women and men who work in the fashion industry, as well as those who are at risk of an eating disorder and can be influenced by the pictures that they see.

The fashion industry is there to make money and there is no legislation to protect models. It basically exploits people who are under-weight and forces others to follow suit.”

Dr Dee Dawson, who runs the Rhodes Farm eating disorders clinic in north London, called for a new law.

“The fashion industry has completely warped what is considered a normal size and it should be held accountable for that,” she said. “They have had years to get their house in order and they have done absolutely nothing — in fact if anything it has got worse.”

If the ban were implemented in London, top models such as Cole, Erin O’Co*nnor, Irina Lazar*eanu, Vlada, Tanya D and Beh*ati Prinsloo would probably be barred.

The six models are due to fly in this weekend as part of the Marks & Spencer Model Bursary — an initiative set up to bring top models to the capital’s shows.

Standing at just under six foot (5ft 11.5in on her model card), O’Connor, the star of M*&S’s latest high-profile television advert, is unlikely to weigh in at anything near the nine and a half stone needed to give her a BMI of 18 or above — and the same would certainly be true of 17-year-old Cole, who is 5ft 10.5 in tall.

It is suggested some of the most famous models in the world would be banned under a BMI cut-off of 18.

Giselle Bun*dchen is reported to have a BMI of 16, Kat*e Moss, according to insiders, has a BMI of about 15 and Eva Herzigova has a BMI of 18.

Last week Madrid City Council, which sponsors the Spanish capital’s fashion week, announced a ban on models with a BMI below 18.

Milan’s mayor Letizia Mor*atti warned she would seek a similar ban on “sick-looking models”.

However, after discussions with fashion designers, London is refusing to follow Madrid in introducing a ban. Hilary Riva, chief executive of the British Fashion Council, said today: “We have canvassed the opinions of London Fashion Week designers for the girls they would most like to see on their catwalks and the girls are being selected for the model bursary accordingly.

“The BFC does not comment or interfere in the aesthetic of any designer’s show.”

Sarah Doukas, founder of Storm, the London agency that employs Cole, hit back at the calls for a ban.

She said: “It is useless to talk about body mass indexes. Who knows what that means apart from your doctor?” It depends on different body types. Some people have different muscle density.

She added: “I believe that girls should just eat healthily, exercise and just be normal. We just wouldn’t use someone who was really under-weight or too thin.”

JK Row*ling has launched an attack on the “skinny obsessed world” on her website. She said she did not want her two daughters to grow up to be “empty headed, self-obsessed, emaciated clones”.

Firstly, many models are size zero/two because they are naturally born that way! They don’t starve, they take care of themselves, and their body types are naturally skinny. High metabolism rate, naturally skinny body types – it does not mean they starve themselves to achieve that!

My BMI’s 17, and I do not starve myself. On the contrary, I eat as much as anyone else. I don’t starve, I don’t just eat a carrot for dinner or whatever hell it is people think skinny people eat. No matter how much I eat, the most I’ve weighed is 51-2kg. It’s just very unfair to think that if someone is skinny, they must be (1)on a diet (2)anorexic (3)bulimic (4)on the verge of death.
It’s very condescending to say ‘We are trying to protect them’. Yes, there are models who starve themselves, go protect them. Don’t throw a blanket assumption over the entire industry that they are all starving themselves and eating only a carrot for dinner.

Next Gisele’s BMI is 16 – Does she look emaciated to you?

vsbig.jpg

Sure doesn’t look like she’s dying of hunger or anything.

And then – to assume that all young girls are going to imitate the models after watching fashion shows. Excuse me, how many young girls actually do watch fashion shows? How many of them actually know Tanya Dzia*hileva , Sasha Pivora*rova, Irina La*zareanu, Vlada Ros*lyakova? How many of them actually watch fashion shows? How many knows Proenza Sc*houler, Zac P*osen, Narciso Rodri*guez? How many actually know that those slouchy bags that everyone is carrying now are actually ‘inspired’ by Balen*ciaga and Chloe?  (Okay going off tangent here)

I’m not saying that only a handful of girls watch fashion shows. I think the portion of girls who follow fashion shows pale in comparision to girls who are into celebrity culture – I’m sure they know more about Jessica, Lindsay, Nicole and Paris than they do models. So maybe the regulators should turn their focus in the right direction?

Moreover, why use one isolated incident to condemn the whole idustry?

And what JK Rowling said – shame on her. You can be fat and obsessed. You can be empty headed, self-obsessed, obese clones. Why the attack on skinny people?

Honestly, I can’t remember the last time people looked at a skinny person and not go ’she must be starving herself.’ I also cannot remember the last time someone looked at a very emaciated person and say ‘I wish I was like her’. Please, people are smarter than that.

Lastly I just can’t stand it when people make fun or criticize of ‘fat’ people it’s considered politically incorrect and rude. But when it comes to criticizing or making fun of ‘thin’ people they justify it as concern. It’s okay when you tell a thin person ‘Hey go eat a cheeseburger you’re so damn skinny’, but not okay when you tell a fat person ‘Hey eat less, you’re getting so damn fat!’. It’s not right.

Ya, so now I’m off to eat my protein bar for lunch. *rolls eyes

‘Xin Fu’

14 09 2006

Siewlee told me last week that she saw some of my photos, and that I look ‘xin fu’, and that she envies me. I think ‘xin fu’ is one chinese word that cannot be sufficiently translated in English. ‘Xin fu’ means lucky, blessed, and in this case I guess also blissful.

And I am reminded again, why I am so lucky. And so happy.

He surprised me tonight, dropped by with supper – he remembered I once said I like mee siam. He was afraid I’d go hungry if I’m working late at night.

He does so much for me, and sometimes I feel that I am really selfish – only taking, and not giving enough.

I wrote an entry a few months back that I was hopeful for the future.

Sometimes I don’t understand how he could care about me so much. I’m just a normal girl. Not particularly pretty, smart, witty or anything else. Oh and also I have dirty toenails. :P

I need money for these!

Think I should give tuition or something. It’s just satisfying when you work hard and then splurge. Ha.

Time for a new phone – I might wanna get the K800i (finally can give Mel a break cause we always use her phone to take photos when we club)

Open secret

10 09 2006

I was frustrated, upset, lathargic and restless. I have a presentation to prepare for tomorrow, and a friend hasn’t sent me his slides. What started off as a ‘pretty nice’ layout and design suddenly seemed boring and been-there-done-that. My skin is quite sensitive, and has broken out in rashes again.

And I miss him a lot.

Then he called. And everything is okay.

Man this sounds kind of pathetic. I don’t wanna be those clingy girlfriend types!

*Aside – My banner header is now Jessica Stam’s Kenzo ad. Perfect picture for ‘Hedonistic’, no?

Surrounded by morons

7 09 2006

I just spent an excruciating hour with the most obnoxious people ever. (Sorry I’m PMSing, so the likelihood is that I’ll be pissed off even if you breathe. And yes, PMS is a handy excuse for bad attitude in general)

I have enough of people who go around telling people that they are ‘really bad in chinese hahahaha no really bad!’ and then go on to speak chinese.

I have enough of people who laugh like morons everytime they hear their Vietnamese friend learn to speak chinese. ‘Oh har har it’s the third sound, oh ha ha aren’t you funny’

Also had enough of people who talk loudly.

Also people who go like ‘Oh I’m interested in Vietnam cause it’s a rising industry so you must tell me more blah blah’, in a stupid brainless act smart way. It’s annoying. I have nothing against Vietnam. I just hate people who make statements like these to make themselves sound smart. It’s like ‘*Insert random third world country here* is a rising country … Very promising industry blahblahblah’
